In this segment, we’ll be looking at helpful ways to encourage that medative state of mind, ready for when we start work on different meditation techniques, which will be covered in subsequent lessons.
Meditation is a discipline that coaches relaxation in the body and calms the mind which I believe, leads to discovering our divine, true self that has no beginning and no end.
When we first start on the path of meditation we can encounter many difficulties. Finding the right time or *fitting it into our daily routines* is typically the first difficulty. The second, is how to relax the body and calming the mind is the third most common difficulty. This is by far the most common difficulty people encounter. This is a tricky technique to accomplish because when we first try and relax the mind, we are attacked by thoughts on every day subjects and worries. Pantanjali, a wise eastern sage likens the mind to a pond into which is thrown a continuous stream of stones, causing ripples upon the ponds surface. The pond represents the mind, the stones, thoughts and the ripples, the disturbances that these thoughts cause. Unless we stop throwing stones, allowing the ripples to become still, we will never see the bottom. In other words, if we are unable to quieten the mind and free it from thoughts we will never see our own true self.
Establishing time
It is important to set aside the same time each day to meditate. This then becomes a discipline, as it’s so easy to have the intentions to meditate every single day, but if a fixed time is not organised, the day then becomes night and then we just simply *can’t be bothered*.Therefore we should ideally set aside fifteen minutes daily for stilling the mind and attaining inner peace. You might find you actually look forward to these moments that are just for you. Let me assure you now, that this time you set aside will definitely not be wasted time.
I suggest, when starting meditation for the first time, you do two fifteen minute meditations daily. But be sure to leave at least six hours in-between each meditation, dusk and dawn are excellent times to meditate. More importantly, try to give your mind some notice that it is about to meditate. Once you have decided your time for meditation it does help to stick to it as previously mentioned in this article, discipline. This should not be hurried or done whilst you should be doing your washing or you won’t settle. If you meditate before going to sleep in the evening, the serenity produced will help sleeps become better quality, often recommended for insomniacs to try. If you sleep with worries or active thoughts on your mind you will have poor quality of rest, but if you go to bed with a peaceful mind, you should sleep like a child and hopefully awaken in the morning revitalised and refreshed ready for the new day.
If you meditate in the mornings, the inner peace you reach first thing will carry you through the day, with a sense of calm and cope-ability. Again, take your time and do no worry. I find it helpful to set the alarm clock just twenty minutes earlier than normal. I allow five minutes to prepare the room for mediation and then I settle down in peace, because the rest of my family is still sleeping. This is my usual time for positive affirmations as they prepare me for the day. It’s comparable to setting your mind to the right frequency, if we affirm often enough.
Meditation is a perfect way to bring in affirmations, especially morning ones. Leave an hour after a meal, or you will still be in digestion mode. You can meditate anytime of the day, you must find what suits you and your way of life best.
Establishing location
Think of any meditation centres, Yoga rooms or indeed churches that you may have visited in the past and remember how the room felt, how you felt as you entered the room. Most people can feel the space as soon as they walk in to the room. Similar to when you meet a person and you know instantly if you like them or not. This is because the people, who have prayed or meditated previously in that room, have instilled their lingering thoughts and energies there and, as we know, energy cannot be destroyed. That’s one great reason to think about using the same room for each mediation session. Find a place which is quiet, warm and where you know you will not be disturbed.
The more a space is used for meditation the more peaceful the vibrations become there and accordingly, easier to slip into that meditative state of mind. If, like most people, you do not have the room for a ’special meditation room’ in your home, you can utilise another room such as your living room. In this case, before you meditate, you can soften the energy vibrations created by the normal hustle and bustle that will have been created throughout the day, several ways. Most commonly, by thoroughly airing the room and the burning of incense or Aromatherapy oils, but my favourite way is with fresh flowers. Fresh flowers not only contribute their own gentle fragrance, but also provide objects for contemplation if you are working with gazing meditation. Another way to enhance the atmosphere ready for meditation is by playing a tape of soft new age or classical music, but its imperative that I mention here that although music can be a useful aid, many do prefer complete silence during mediation so trial and error to find what suits you best. Lighting should be soft, wear clothes that are warm, comfortable and of course none restrictive, I’d also suggest that you remove your shoes, simply because the more comfortable you are, the easier it will be for you to relax in preparation for mediation.
As I’ve mentioned, we are not all lucky enough to have our own mediation room, but there are alternatives. Use of your bedroom (try not to fall asleep though), the garden (find a tree or plant you feel most connected to and use that as your own personal mediation space during the warmer months) or by finding any room that is not being utilized in the evenings or mornings. (I have known people to use the cupboard under their stairs to find that peace and personal space that’s just theirs! Any space will do, as long as you feel safe and comfortable there.
Establishing posture
It’s alright, I’m not about to dictate to you, strange and weird postures that only the most athletic or subtle bodies can manage, but I do need to point out that you should get your posture right for you before contemplating a meditation. Otherwise you may find the whole exercise ruined by uncomfortable fidgets. Not only for comfort, but if you have got the posture right you should feel grounded and safe.
Which ever posture you choose, you must insure that your spine is straight, as this is the main channel in which your energy flows from the earth and through your spiritual body towards the higher realms of consciousness. Not only that, but you don’t want to injure your back by sitting slumped for long periods of time. Find what suits you by trying a few things out, lying down, sitting up in a high back chair, or on a sofa. Perhaps you can use props around your home to adjust your comfort levels, such as big floor cushions or yoga mats.
Have a play and see what you feel most comfortable with. Try each position by staying in it for five minutes at a time and seeing how your body feels in that space. Don’t worry, you don’t need to have a set posture, you can swop and change the more you practise meditation, and soon you’ll have it down to a fine art. You’ll know exactly what feels good and what does not.
Words to think about until our next lessons “Trial and error, find what suits you and don’t be afraid to try new things. You never know, the grass could actually be greener on the other side, if not then no harm done.”.

There are many individuals today claiming to have psychic abilities. Some have made quite lucrative careers out of these claims. But are they real? Can they truly see the future? Do they actually have the ability to speak to the dead, foretell future events and recount past lives? I believe that it is almost impossible to predict the future of another person. It is much easier to predict your own future; after all it’s your life, who could ever know more about it than you? As far as speaking to speaking to the dead and recounting past lives, well I’ll keep an open mind about such things but my personal hunch is that most people claiming to have these abilities are less than genuine.
Many people claiming to be psychics are in fact frauds. But the same can be said about many doctors, lawyers, politicians, salesmen, or people in any other profession. One of the problems with determining which psychics are genuine and which are not is that there are no definitive guidelines for measurement. There are no professional policies or standardized practices to adhere to. There is no established governing body to report fraudulent psychics to.
Unlike other professions which have regulatory or licensing protocols to follow, there are no such standards for psychics. Anyone can call themselves a psychic and begin practicing professionally.
Fortunately there are some ways to determine whether a psychic may be misrepresenting themselves. A professional psychic relies heavily on reputation. A psychic with a bad reputation soon becomes a former psychic looking for a career change. If you are considering paying for the services of a psychic, ask for references and testimonials of satisfied clients. If a psychic is reluctant to provide such information it may be wise to search elsewhere for psychic services.
The best regulation of the psychic industry is word of mouth advertising. Frauds and con artists gain a bad reputation very quickly these days. A psychic with confidence in their abilities will have no problem with providing this information. Do your homework, ask others with an interest in psychics who they would recommend.
One thing to watch out for is anyone, psychic or not, who tries to use fear, intimidation, dis-empowerment, uncertainty, doubt, or any of a range of similar tactics to get you to hand over your power and fork over your hard earned money. One of the oldest scams around is for a fortune-teller, or con artist claiming to be a fortune teller, to tell you that you are under a curse of some sort, that “evil spirits”, “bad mojo” or some type other of curse is causing whatever sort of problem you may be having. This of course leads to being asked for money, usually being asked for money several times as part of an ongoing “treatment” to rid you of your horrible curses. The scammers try to convince you that they can fix your problems, exorcise demons, remove a curse, but it will take more time, more readings and of course more money. This turns into a kind of blackmail with you acting as a sort of willing victim. Beware of this scenario. If you feel you are being conned then you probably are.
Trust your own intuition in these cases and back out of this situation gracefully. You will be amazed at the change in attitude of the con-artist when they realize that you are no longer willing to hand over your money. Be strong and trust yourself to do the right thing. Most of this is plain common sense, but many times, especially when people are under a lot of stress or in a vulnerable state, plain sense just isn’t very common.

You will find that the man that concentrates is well poised,
whereas the man that allows his mind to wander is easily upset.
When in this state wisdom does not pass from the subconscious
storehouse into the consciousness. There must be mental quiet
before the two consciousnesses can work in harmony. When you are
able to concentrate you have peace of mind.
If you are in the habit of losing your poise, form the habit of
reading literature that has a quieting power. Just the second you
feel your poise slipping, say, “Peace,” and then hold this
thought in mind and you will never lose your self-control.
There cannot be perfect Psychic - Concentration until there is peace of
mind. So keep thinking peace, acting peace, until you are at
peace with all the world. For when once you have reached this
state there will be no trouble to concentrate on anything you
wish.
When you have peace of mind you are not timid or anxious, or
fearful, or rigid and you will not allow any disturbing thought
to influence you. You cast aside all fears, and think of yourself
as a spark of the Divine Being, as a manifestation of the “One
Universal Principle” that fills all space and time. Think of
yourself thus as a child of the infinite, possessing infinite
possibilities.
Write on a piece of paper, “I have the power to do and to be
whatever I wish to do and be.” Keep this mentally before you, and
you will find the thought will be of great help to you.
The Mistake of Concentrating on Your Business While Away. In
order to be successful today, you must concentrate, but don’t
become a slave to Psychic - Concentration, and carry your business cares
home. Just as sure as you do you will be burning the life forces
at both ends and the fire will go out much sooner than was
intended.
Many men become so absorbed in their business that when they go
to church they do not hear the preacher because their minds are
on their business. If they go to the theater they do not enjoy it
because their business is on their minds. When they go to bed
they think about business instead of sleep and wonder why they
don’t sleep. This is the wrong kind of Psychic - Concentration and is
dangerous. It is involuntary. When you are unable to get anything
out of your mind it becomes unwholesome as any thought held
continuously causes weariness of the flesh. It is a big mistake
to let a thought rule you, instead of ruling it. He who does not
rule himself is not a success. If you cannot control your
Psychic - Concentration, your health will suffer.
So never become so absorbed with anything that you cannot lay it
aside and take up another. This is self-control.
Psychic - Concentration Is Paying Attention to a Chosen Thought. Everything
that passes before the eye makes an impression on the
subconscious mind, but unless you pay attention to some certain
thing you will not remember what you saw. For instance if you
walked down a busy street without seeing anything that attracted
your particular attention, you could not recall anything you saw.
So you see only what attracts your attention. If you work you
only see and remember what you think about. When you concentrate
on something it absorbs your whole thought.
Self-Study Valuable. Everyone has some habits that can be
overcome by Psychic - Concentration. We will say for instance, you are in
the habit of complaining, or finding fault with yourself or
others; or, imagining that you do not possess the ability of
others; or feeling that you are not as good as someone else; or
that you cannot rely on yourself; or harboring any similar
thoughts or thoughts of weakness. These should be cast aside and
instead thoughts of strength should be put in their place. Just
remember every time you think of yourself as being weak, in some
way you are making yourself so by thinking you are. Our mental
conditions make us what we are. Just watch yourself and see how
much time you waste in worrying, fretting and complaining. The
more of it you do the worse off you are.
Just the minute you are aware of thinking a negative thought
immediately change to a positive one. If you start to think of
failure, change to thinking of success. You have the germ of
success within you. Care for it the same as the setting hen
broods over the eggs and you can make it a reality.
You can make those that you come in contact with feel as you do,
because you radiate vibrations of the way you feel and your
vibrations are felt by others. When you concentrate on a certain
thing you turn all the rays of your vibrations on this. Thought
is the directing power of all Life’s vibrations. If a person
should enter a room with a lot of people and feel as if he were a
person of no consequence no one would know he was there unless
they saw him, and even if they did, they would not remember
seeing him, because they were not attracted towards him. But let
him enter the room feeling that he was magnetic and concentrating
on this thought, others would feel his vibration. So remember the
way you feel you can make others feel. This is the law. Make
yourself a concentrated dynamo from which your thoughts vibrate
to others. Then you are a power in the world. Cultivate the art
of feeling, for as I said before you can only make others feel
what you feel.
If you will study all of the great characters of history you will
find that they were enthusiastic. First they were enthusiastic
themselves, and then they could arouse others’ enthusiasm. It is
latent in everyone. It is a wonderful force when once aroused.
All public men to be a success have to possess it. Cultivate it
by Psychic - Concentration. Set aside some hour of the day, wherein to hold
rapt converse with the soul. Meditate with sincere desire and
contrite heart and you will be able to accomplish that which you
have meditated on. This is the keynote of success.
“Think, speak and act just as you wish to be, And you will be
that which you wish to be.”
You are just what you think you are and not what you may appear
to be. You may fool others but not yourself. You may control your
life and actions just as you can control your hands. If you want
to raise your hand you must first think of raising it. If you
want to control your life you must first control your thinking.
Easy to do, is it not? Yes it is, if you will but concentrate on
what you think about.
For he only can
That says he will.
How can we secure Psychic - Concentration? To this question, the first and
last answer must be: By interest and strong motive. The stronger
the motive the greater the Psychic - Concentration.–Eustace Miller, M. D.
The Successful Lives Are the Concentrated Lives. The utterly
helpless multitude that sooner or later have to be cared for by
charity, are those that were never able to concentrate, and who
have become the victims of negative ideas.
Train yourself so you will be able to centralize your thought and
develop your brain power, and increase your mental energy, or you
can be a slacker, a drifter, a quitter or a sleeper. It all
depends on how you concentrate, or centralize your thoughts. Your
thinking then becomes a fixed power and you do not waste time
thinking about something that would not be good for you. You pick
out the thoughts that will be the means of bringing you what you
desire, and they become a material reality. Whatever we create in
the thought world will some day materialize. That is the law.
Don’t forget this.
In the old days men drifted without Psychic - Concentration but this is a
day of efficiency and therefore all of our efforts must be
concentrated, if we are to win any success worth the name.
Why People Often Do Not Get What They Concentrate On. Because
they sit down in hopeless despair and expect it to come to them.
But if they will just reach out for it with their biggest effort
they will find it is within their reach. No one limits us but
ourselves. We are what we are today as the result of internal
conditions. We can control the external conditions. They are
subject to our will.
Through our Psychic - Concentration we can attract what we want, because we
became enrapport with the Universal forces, from which we can get
what we want.
You have watched races no doubt. They all line up together. Each
has his mind set on getting to the goal before the others. This
is one kind of Psychic - Concentration. A man starts to think on a certain
subject. He has all kinds of thoughts come to him, but by
Psychic - Concentration he shuts out all these but the one he has chosen.
Psychic - Concentration is just a case of willing to do a certain thing and
doing it.
If you want to accomplish anything first put yourself in a
concentrating, reposeful, receptive, acquiring frame of mind. In
tackling unfamiliar work make haste slowly and deliberately and
then you will secure that interior activity, which is never
possible when you are in a hurry or under a strain. When you
“think hard” or try to hurry results too quickly, you generally
shut off the interior flow of thoughts and ideas. You have often
no doubt tried hard to think of something but could not, but just
as soon as you stopped trying to think of it, it came to you.
